The history of the USA is marked not only by the fierce struggle for Independence, but for the flourishing artistic activity of the outstanding, famous people of the North American continent. One of the pioneers in the field of American art is Gilbert Charles Stuart   – it is one of the most outstanding portraitists of the American history and modernity of art. He was even entrusted with the privilege to write a portrait of George Washington that remains his best and the most well-known work; however, the portrait is unfinished, and there are many discussions about the portrait being held now. I even knew how to write an annotated bibliography about the mystery of the unfinished portrait after writing annotated bibliography of my group-mate about Gilbert Stuart. There are many myths and interesting facts about the portrait of Washington   – researchers and historians say that though the portrait was not finished, it was held by Stuart as an example, and copied many times to be sold for $100 to patriotic customers. It is amazing to think of a rich and vibrant heritage that Stuart has left for the successive generations – he painted six Presidents of the USA, including James Madison and others. The life of Stuart was surely disrupted by the instability and turbulence of the American Revolution times – he lived in Boston, Philadelphia, Ireland and other places trying to escape the military disorders. His legacy of about one thousand portraits is an essential treasure of the American art.
